In Year 1 over the past couple of weeks we have had a visit from Lily’s dad Mr Korchak. He told us all about the sea creatures that he keeps at home in his aquarium. He showed us different types of coral and told us about their life cycle. The children enjoyed the opportunity to observe a sea snail, hermit crab and coral.

In Science the children have been discussing and comparing similarities and differences between animals and humans.

In RE the children enjoyed learning about Hinduism. They listened to the story of Ganesha, the God with the elephant head. Afterwards, we discussed what the symbols represented and acted out the story.

We have also started our final RE topic on ‘Neighbours’. During this topic we will be looking at the work of CAFOD.
In Maths the children have been focussing on 3D shape and their properties. I am sure you will agree the children made some fabulous models using 3D shapes.

In English the children have been listening to the story of ‘Dear Greenpeace’.  This was a great book for inspiring the children to write their own letter to Greenpeace about concerns they had about the sea life in the ocean and environmental issues.

For homework this week the children have been asked to create a mask for ‘Wear it Wild’ day which will we celebrated in school on Friday. There are some ideas for masks and activities available from the ‘Go Wild’ website If anybody has a problem completing this task at home then please speak with Mrs Kelly or I during the week.

Enjoy the sunny weekend!

WB: 8.6.15.

The children have had yet another busy week in Year 1.
In English the children enjoyed listening to the story of Dougal’s Deep Sea Diary. Afterwards, the children were encouraged to select a day of the week and use their imagination to record their own diary entry.
In Maths the children have continued learning about the time – focussing on quarter past and quarter to.
In Art the children designed some fabulous 3D pictures of their own sea life creature. These are now proudly displayed in our classroom! Here are a few pictures of our creations!

On Thursday the children attended a lovely Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Father Michael. This was led by the Year 3 children who had recently made their First Holy Communion.
In RE the children have been thinking about saying ‘sorry’ and how it makes us feel when we ‘forgive’ others.
During our Music time the children listened to ‘Aquarium’ by Camille Saint-Saëns. Afterwards, they discussed which musical instruments they could hear and then used chime bars and triangles to respond to the changes in pitch.

The children were brilliant today taking part with enthusiasm in our ‘Sports Day’.
The winning team was St Bernadette
2nd place was St John Fisher
3rd place was St Clare
4th place was St Thomas More

Next week in English we will continue to use the story of Dougal the deep sea diver to inspire our writing. The phonics screening will also take place. In Maths we will focus on 3D shape.
During RE the children will be learning about Hinduism and listening to the story about Ganesh.
Enjoy the weekend and hope to see you at the summer fair!
